The Fire of "58

On the morning of March 25, 1958, less than a year after the “Fire of ’57”, main street, Stephenville Crossing was hit with another significant fire.

In the above photo (1950s), “Lucas Ice Cream and Confectionary”, the one with the the Coke sign, is visible on the right. Also on the right is a Taxi parked at the “Station Taxi”. Closer up on the right is the 2 story “A. V. Gallant Building”, where the fire was supposed to have started.

The 2 buildings on the opposite side of the street were also destroyed in the fire.

In this photo, the proprietor of the “Tops Grill” is standing in front of the “A. V. Gallant building”. The “Tops Grill” was located to the basement of the “A. V. Gallant building”.

“Lucas Ice Cream and Confectionary” can be seen in the background.

In this photo, taken looking in the opposite direction, you can see “Lucas Ice Cream and Confectionary”. Also visable is the foundation of the “A. V. Gallant Building”, which was all that remained after the fire. Also visable in this photo is the “Cozy Corner”, the flour shed and Jim Joy’s store (n the background across the railway tracks).
