William “George” Stone (1882-1954) and Susannah Bailey (1886-1976)
William “George” Stone was born in Upper Rocky Brook on August 8, 1882.
About 1890, George Stone arrived in Skimmer Cove (Lower Lance Cove) with his father Martin, who for some reason decided to relocate his family from Upper Rocky Brook (White Rock) across Smith Sound. At the time, George was 8 years old.
McAlpine’s 1894-97 Directory for Skimmer Cove included 13 families, 12 fisherman and a mail Carrier. One of the fishing families included Martin Stone, his wife Hannah Hart Long and 10 children. Three of the children died between 1895 and 1897.
George Stone married Susannah Bailey at Old Bonaventure on May 18, 1907. They built a house in Lower Lance Cove and had 7 children.

Clement Stone was born in Lower Lance Cove on June 26, 1907. Clement first married Josephine “Josie” Fifield and later married Martha Whitty. Clement died of natural causes at the age of 88 at Lower Lance Cove on October 17, 1995.
Harvey Cecil Stone was born in Lower Lance Cove on July 26, 1909. Harvey died at age 13 years, of Diptheria at Lower Lance Cove on January 13, 1922.
“Olive” Leona May Stone was born in Lower Lance Cove on May 21, 1921. Olive married Hayward Joseph Young of Stephenville Crossing, NL at Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 12, 1944. Olive died in Stephenville, NL on June 11, 1982.
Bertha Mary Stone was born in in Lower Lance Cove on June 1, 1923. Bertha died at Lower Lance Cove on January 29, 1924.
Gilbert Garfield Stone was born in Lower Lance Cove in 1925. Gilbert died at St. John’s NL on July 11, 2010.
Eldred George Stone was born in Lower Lance Cove on June 19, 1929. Eldrid died at Lower Lance Cove on July 23, 1929.
George Stone and Susannah Bailey raised 3 children at Lower Lance Cove. The family built schooners and fished Smith Sound.
